The United Way of Greater Kansas City recently announced the selection of RW2 Career and Technical Education (RW2) as one of their Catalyst Grant awardees. This prestigious grant is awarded to organizations that demonstrate innovative approaches to addressing community needs and creating long-lasting change.
RW2, a leading provider of career and technical education (CTE) programs, was chosen for its commitment to equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the ever-evolving tech workforce.
This recognition from the United Way is a testament to RW2’s dedication to preparing or helping people skill up for fulfilling and lucrative careers. It is also testament to their ongoing efforts to make a positive impact in the Greater Kansas City community. Let’s take a closer look at the Catalyst Grant Program, how RW2 plans to utilize this grant and continue its mission of empowering students through CTE.
Overview of the Catalyst Grant Program
The Catalyst Grant Program, a collaborative effort between United Way of Greater Kansas City and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Launched in February 2023, this initiative is specifically designed to propel the missions of organizations led by or primarily serving Black, Latino, and other communities of color within the six-county service area covered by United Way. With the latest funding round, the program has awarded grants to 88 organizations, with individual grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, culminating in a total investment of $2.1 million.
By providing these grants, the program not only amplifies the voices of these vital organizations but also equips them with the necessary resources to expand their staff, launch or sustain programs, and enhance their resilience.
In turn, this strengthens their ability to make a measurable difference in the lives of residents across Kansas City, underscoring the program’s role in fostering an equitable and inclusive economic development landscape. Through such strategic investments, the Catalyst Grant Program ensures these community pillars can continue their crucial work, breaking down barriers and fostering prosperity throughout the region. These organizations are pivotal in the region with each having a unique mission and impact on the community.
The United Way of Greater Kansas City focuses on mobilizing resources and investing in high-impact nonprofits to address critical needs in healthcare, youth opportunities, and financial security across six counties. Their approach includes mobilizing Waymakers™ – a term they use for their change agents, to create sustainable solutions to the community’s challenges. Their work touches one in three Kansas citizens annually, showcasing their significant footprint in connecting residents with essential services and resources.
On the other hand, The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, based in Kansas City, Mo., prioritizes building inclusive prosperity by fostering a prepared workforce and promoting entrepreneur-focused economic development. With a robust endowment, the Foundation strives to eliminate systemic barriers and change conditions for economic stability, mobility, and prosperity accessible to all, irrespective of race, gender, or geography. The foundation’s efforts in education and entrepreneurship are aimed at creating conditions where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Together, these organizations contribute to the vibrancy and economic health of Greater Kansas City and beyond as they support initiatives like RW2.
How the Grant Will Propel RW2’s Initiatives
The Catalyst Grant from United Way of Greater Kansas City presents a significant opportunity for RW2 to further increase and enhance its organizational capacity. This will ultimately amplify its core focus of providing affordable and short-term education and training for high-demand careers. This currently includes 2D and 3D drafting and design and information technology, particularly Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), Revit for Building Information Modeling (BIM), Cybersecurity.
With the grant’s financial support, RW2 will be able to expand opportunities and resources for students while maintaining key and unique opportunities such as allowing new students to experience the first two weeks of training with no obligation, a critical factor in reduced barriers to entry for potential students who are exploring careers in these high-demand fields. This no-risk introduction is also pivotal in attracting a broader base of participants, especially from underrepresented communities.
The grant support is also essential to helping RW2 leverage new collaborations and partnerships. For example, RW2 will partner with AmeriCorps to utilize the services of a VISTA who will assist with various projects related to the School’s growth and sustainability.
